VPN (Virtual Private Network)

A private encrypted tunnel through a public network like the internet that provides an additional layer of security. VPN's rely on having the same encryption hardware or software at both ends.

Link-level (layer 2 and 3) encryption prevents traffic analysis (a form of attack), and provides extra protection by encrypting each datagram except the link-level information. This prevents a listener from obtaining information about your network structure.
